Box 56, Dunedin , New Zealand;. Author contributions: A. Two issues long debated among Pacific and American prehistorians are i whether there was a pre-Columbian introduction of chicken Gallus gallus to the Americas and ii whether Polynesian contact with South America might be identified archaeologically, through the recovery of remains of unquestionable Polynesian origin. We present a radiocarbon date and an ancient DNA sequence from a single chicken bone recovered from the archaeological site of El Arenal-1, on the Arauco Peninsula, Chile.

These results not only provide firm evidence for the pre-Columbian introduction of chickens to the Americas, but strongly suggest that it was a Polynesian introduction. Argument about the origins and date of introduction of the domestic fowl or chicken Gallus gallus to the Americas has raged for over 30 years. Despite claims that it might be native to the region 1 , it has never been recovered or reported from paleontological, Paleo-Indian, or, until now, prehistoric archaeological contexts in the Americas.

A Portuguese or Spanish introduction to the east coast of South America around AD has been suggested 2 , but when Pizarro reached Peru in , he found that chickens were already an integral part of Incan economy and culture, suggesting at least some history of chickens in the region. Consequently, there have been numerous suggestions of a pre-European chicken introduction to the west coast of South America 3 — 5 , in which both Asian and Polynesian contacts have been proposed 1 , 4 , 6.

Here, we provide the first unequivocal evidence for a pre-European introduction of chickens to South America and indicate, through ancient DNA evidence, that the likely source of that introduction was Polynesia. This evidence has implications for debates about ancient Polynesian voyaging capabilities as well as those addressing prehistoric population interactions and exchange. This study also presents the first published ancient DNA sequences for chickens providing valuable data for researchers concerned with the loss of genetic variation in modern domestic stocks 7.

Polynesians introduced dogs, pigs, rats and chickens to many of the islands they settled 8. Chicken remains first appear in Vanuatu and Tonga between and B.

The Dubious Science of Genetics-Based Dating

When we think of DNA inside our cells, we think of our 46 chromosomes, half from mom and half from dad. Our chromosomes indeed contain almost all of our DNA, which codes for the proteins that carry out the tasks needed for life. Some relatively small segments of DNA have been found outside of the normal chromosomal sequences, however.

And these separate pieces, called extra-chromosomal ec DNA, may have an outsized role in cancer.

Gene half-life Reconstructing dinosaurs from ancient DNA has been dealt a blow with a new study finding genetic material can only last one million years. An international team of researchers reached the finding after analysing DNA extracted from bones of the extinct New Zealand moa. They found that while short fragments of DNA could possibly survive up to one million years, sequences of 30 base pairs or more would only have a ‘half-life’ of around , years under certain conditions.

Lead author Dr Morten Allentoft from Murdoch University ‘s Ancient DNA lab in Perth, says their results contradict earlier studies which claimed to have extracted DNA fragments several hundred base pairs long from dinosaur bones and preserved insects – claims which underpinned the storyline of the movie Jurassic Park. The latest study, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B , also establishes a DNA ‘decay rate’, which could help identify specimens likely to yield useful genetic material.

It might also one day enable DNA to be used to date bones and teeth, or even be used for forensic investigation of human remains. Allentoft says the idea was first hinted at in s, but subsequent studies have failed to pin it down.

In our Love App-tually series, Mashable shines a light into the foggy world of online dating. It is cuffing season after all. Match and eHarmony laid the online groundwork decades ago, but momentum built after the first iPhone was released in Grindr was founded two years later, Tinder in , and Bumble in These apps, bolstered by location-tracking, swiping, and almighty algorithms, brought the masses to online dating.

But as we look to the future, online dating companies have a new problem to tackle. If we’re going on a lot of dates, great, but are we really on a better path to finding a partner?

We live in a golden age of online dating, where complex algorithms and innovative apps promise to pinpoint your perfect romantic match in no time. And yet, dating remains as tedious and painful as ever. A seemingly unlimited supply of swipes and likes has resulted not in effortless pairings, but in chronic dating-app fatigue. Nor does online dating seem to be shortening the time we spend looking for mates; Tinder reports that its users spend up to 90 minutes swiping per day.

Watch out bad guys! As you can see, DNA can tell you many things about your body including your age. Who knows what scientists will discover.

ENCODE is a public research consortium aimed at identifying all functional elements in the human and mouse genomes. The ENCODE ” Encyclopedia ” organizes these data into two levels of annotations: 1 integrative-level annotations, including a registry of candidate cis-regulatory elements and 2 ground-level annotations derived directly from experimental data.

ENCODE 4 seeks to expand the catalog of candidate regulatory elements in the human and mouse genomes through the study of a broader diversity of biological samples including those associated with disease as well as by employing novel assays not used previously in ENCODE. To maximize access to ENCODE data by the research community, all data is shared in databases without controlled access.

See: Program Staff. As the ENCODE Project has increased its study of primary cells and tissues, it has begun working on human biological samples that have been explicitly consented for genomic research and unrestricted sharing of genomic data, in order to maximize the accessibility and utility of ENCODE data.

They observed that the longest seen to date was 2,, bases in length. The read was reconstructed from a sequence of eleven individual reads on the basis that the reads appeared consecutively in the channel, mapped contiguously to the reference genome, and the evidence on which they were originally split was weak. The authors noted that the reconstruction process was particularly applicable to ultra-long read preparations.

BSB analysed their individual DNA profiles to see what crucial element each member represents in the group’s DNA. Watch the video here.

They also ask for a lot of trust with your DNA information — trust that, in some ways, may not be earned. Home DNA testing kits usually involve taking a cheek swab or saliva sample and mailing it off to the company. In that little sample is the most personal information you can share: your genetic code. Some companies share that data with law enforcement , and most sell your DNA data to third parties , after which it can become difficult to track.

For some people who work for small companies or serve in the military, it can affect insurance premiums and even the ability to get insurance at all. While DNA testing has been used in medical and scientific contexts for decades, direct-to-consumer testing kits are still relatively new and legal policies that govern the private use of consumer data are still being developed.

According to Dr. James Hazel, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Genetic Privacy and Identity in Community Settings, there are fewer protections for your data with consumer DNA testing kits than there would be if you were taking a medical test.
